or: A Keener Glance at the Ambivalence of the World
Die Arbeiten der Künstlerin Dikla Stern widmen sich den schwierigen, tiefergehenden Kausalitäten unseres Seins und werfen einen geschärften Blick auf die Komplexität der Dinge. Mit Witz und Ironie greifen sie eine Vielzahl von Fragestellungen und Themenkomplexen auf, die tief in unseren Alltag dringen und thematisieren beispielsweise zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen und gesellschaftliche Tabus. Dabei sind sie geprägt von einer kritischen Haltung gegenüber kulturellen Konventionen, politischen Entwicklungen und sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten. Ihre Werke laden uns ein, nicht nur in globale Geschehnisse einzutauchen, vielmehr bilden sie ein Gegenüber, das uns zur Reflexion über die Welt und das darin eingebettete eigene Ich drängt.
Aktuell verortet sich ihr Schaffen zunehmend in raumgreifenden Installationen, die sich auf gesellschaftliche und politische Ereignisse beziehen.
Alltagsgegenstände, welche den Betrachter*innen förmlich ins Auge springen, fungieren als Sinnbild für die neue Realität Europas. Gekonnt verweist Sterns Werk durch den symbolhaften Charakter der einzelnen Objekte auf die vielschichtigen Dimensionen, Überlappungen, Verschränkungen und Absurditäten politischer Verstrickungen, wie auch der Allgegenwärtigkeit des Krieges.
The artist’s visuals use a mirror finish as a stylistic element, drawing a parallel to everyday life and serving as a cynical reference to our hedonistic society with its shifting identities and realities. Thus, Stern’s works also stand in the tradition of Pop Art, which evolved as a reaction to the mass culture and consumerism of the post-war period and criticized the superficiality and banality of modern society. Inevitably, her works pose the question as to what kind of world we currently live in, but also what kind of world we would like to see the next generation being born into and therefore, what we want to leave behind; and they emphasize the importance of the time context in which we observe art.
The usage of writing is a core key element in Dikla Stern’s works. It can range from cute and charming representations down to disturbing and confrontational images that point to social problems such as violence against women or political unrest. Language is considered an action that co-designs social reality and establishes norms and identities.
Unlike traditional art, which was based on the beauty or perfection of the final product or the technical skills of the artist, Dikla Stern’s pictorial, interdisciplinary, and experimental creative activity borrows from Conceptual Art and focuses on the intellectual exchange underlying the contents of the works. As reflections of their time and by means of ironic and satirical imagery, her works do not only invite us to immerse ourselves into current world affairs, but also demand that we consciously engage with them. Vigilantly, they urge us to think about the past, the present, and the future, and to cast a keener glance at the world.
